Home > Barns > Floorplans > Standard vs Kneewall Loft Comparison

The drawings below show in plan view and elevation the difference between a Barn with a standard loft and one with a kneewall. The optional kneewall increases the usable width in the loft by 3', and adds approximately 24% more usable area to the loft. This is accomplished by supporting the rafters on a short wall (a kneewall) rather than having them sit directly on the loft floor. A Barn with a Kneewall costs more than one with the standard roof and is somewhat more difficult and time comsuming to assemble. However, in most cases the additional expense and labor is more than offset by the space gained.

NOTE: the loft floor in a Barn with a Kneewall will not support more weight than one in a standard height Barn.
