Home > Why Shelter-Kit?
Why should you buy a kit building from Shelter-Kit?
We have been in business for over 35 years-
We have had a lot of experience designing buildings to customers' specific requirements. We have a very clear purpose and mission: manufacturing kit buildings primarily for assembly by owners with no prior building experience.
Over 1400 of our buildings have been assembled by their owners. In the process of working with our customers, we have continuously refined our instructions and kit details to make your project more successful.
We provide you with information and assistance to make your project successful. We welcome calls and e-mails from our customers before, during and after their building project.
Our buildings are pre cut and specifically designed for owner assembly-
Our buildings are unlike any other kits, for the following reasons:
They are easy to assemble and are error free.
All of our kits can include a complete, weather tight shell. Customers can chose to delete components, including windows, doors, roofing, etc., and buy those locally.
All materials are selected for quality and ease of assembly and fit. The weight of each piece is limited to what two individuals can handle. The kits are made of individual pieces, and are not "panelized".
The required construction techniques are easy. All joints are designed for an easy fit.
All of the terms in the instructions are easily understandable by amateurs. Our customers will work from our drawings and step-by-step instructions, instead of difficult to read blueprints.
All of our kits are sized and designed so that assembly is not too large a project for non-professionals. They go together quickly.
We use post & beam construction in all of our kits-
Assembly of our post & beam frame is much easier for amateurs, and allows for more flexibility in your interior floor plan, door and window placement.
We only use high quality materials-
We very carefully select each piece of lumber. It is very important to us that each piece is square and true, to make assembling your kit as easy as possible.
We custom design nearly every kit for the customer's specific requirements-
We offer distinct types of post & beam buildings, each of which can be custom designed to a degree to meet your requirements
Each kit is designed for specific uses, as follows:
Barn-House-
These can be our largest house kits, with sizes ranging from 860 square feet to 2,500 square feet, or more, of living space. The Barn-House is a two-story building, and is available in 24’ or 26’ wide models, up to 64’ long in 8’ increments. We offer Barn-Houses in “ell” or “tee” configurations. We offer gable dormers in various sizes, to allow for more second floor natural light and ventilation. We do not offer additions for this building, although Barn-House owners may add their own additions, if they are self-supporting. Barn-Houses offer a great deal of flexibility in door, window, interior wall and stair placement. They are the least expensive on a per-square foot basis.
Lofthouse-
The Lofthouse is available in sizes from 385 square feet to 2,500 square feet. The main section of the Lofthouse is smaller than our smallest Barn-House. The main section of the Lofthouse and Lofthouse Extensions are two story, while the other optional Shelter-Kit additions are one-story.
The Lofthouse offers great versatility, as it can be easily expanded at any time, using Shelter-Kit supplied Porch, Deck, Lean-To, and Extension kits.
Unit One-
The Unit One is based on a 12'X12' easy to assemble, one-story module, that is easy to build and can be enlarged in any direction at any time. We offer Porches, Decks and Enclosed Porches for the Unit One. Unit One owners have combined as many as 12 Unit Ones, some adding modules as many as twenty years after the original construction, to meet additional space requirements.
Barn-
Our Barns are two story buildings, with 16’ wide models available, from 16’ to 32’ long. We also offer 24’ or 26’ wide models, up to 64’ long in 8’ increments. We offer Barns in “ell” or “tee” configurations. We offer gable dormers in various sizes, to allow for more second floor natural light and ventilation. Our barns are used for a variety of purposes, including garages, workshops, housing for animals, farm stands, agricultural processing, commercial, etc. The design of this building allows for great flexibility in door, window, and interior post and wall placement.
We do not offer additions for this building, although Barn owners may add their own additions, if they are self-supporting.
