Thinking About an ADU? Here's How to Build One with a Shelter-Kit

More and more homeowners are discovering the magic of adding an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to their property - and for good reason. Whether you’re dreaming of a guest cottage, a home office, space for aging parents, or even a rental to earn extra income, an ADU offers big benefits in a small(ish) footprint.
And the best part? You can build it yourself -with a Shelter-Kit.
Let’s walk through the steps of how to make that happen.
1. Check Local Zoning and Permitting Rules
Before anything else, you’ll want to call or visit your town’s building or planning department. Every municipality has its own rules about what you can build, how big it can be, and where it can go on your property. Ask specifically about ADUs or secondary structures.
Pro tip: Ask about utilities (water, septic, electric) too. Some areas allow shared systems; others may require upgrades.
2. Choose the Right Kit for Your Needs
At Shelter-Kit, we offer a range of designs that work beautifully as ADUs -from cozy tiny homes to stylish carriage houses with garage + loft combos. Think about how you plan to use the space and who will be using it. Will it need a full kitchen and bathroom? Do you want it one-story, or is a lofted sleeping area okay?
Not sure? We’re happy to help you choose or customize.
3. Prepare Your Site
Once your plans are approved, it’s time to prep the site. This might mean clearing a spot, leveling ground, or pouring a slab or foundation. We will provide you with a foundation plan for whatever option you choose.
Shelter-Kits are designed to be built by people like you, with little or no construction experience, but site prep is often a job better left to local professionals - especially when it comes to excavation or concrete work.
4. Assemble Your Shelter-Kit
Here’s where the fun starts. Once your kit is delivered, you and your build crew (which might just be your friends and family!) can begin assembling your ADU using the, custom, detailed instructions we provide with your kit.
All our kits are fully precut - no measuring, sawing, or second-guessing. If you can lift a hammer and follow directions, you can do this. (We do not cut siding, this is for efficiency, siding should be cut after the kit is built)
And if you have a question? We’re just a phone call away.
5. Add the Finishing Touches
Once your ADU is weather-tight and secure, you’ll move on to the finish work: installing systems (plumbing, electrical, HVAC), interior walls, floors, kitchen and bath fixtures, and finally - decorating the space!
Some homeowners hire contractors for these steps; others take on the finishing themselves over time.
Ready to Build Your Backyard Dream?
Adding an ADU doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or out of reach. With a Shelter-Kit, you get a high-quality, customizable structure that’s DIY-friendly, energy efficient, and built to last.
Let’s talk about your vision - and make it a reality.
