Building a home isn't just about choosing a floor plan. It's about building something that works where you live.
At Shelter-Kit, we've spent more than 50 years helping people build homes, barns, garages, and cottages throughout the Northeast and beyond. While we've shipped kits across the continental United States, our roots have always been here. We understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with building in the Northeast because we've been doing it for generations.
Every region has its own personality. Here in New England, we think about things a little differently.
We think about snow loads.
We think about mud season.
We think about frost depth, steep driveways, wooded lots, old farm fields, and lakeside properties that have been in families for generations.
We understand that many people aren't just building a house. They're creating a place where parents can age comfortably, adult children can return home, or grandchildren can gather and make memories for years to come.
That local perspective shapes the way we work with every customer.
Over the coming months, you'll notice us sharing more resources specifically for New England homeowners. We'll be creating guides about building in New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York. We'll answer common questions about planning, permitting, budgeting, and choosing the right building for your property.(I can do this to some extent)
Our goal isn't simply to help you buy a building kit. It's to help you understand the entire journey.
Whether you're considering a backyard cottage, a retirement home, a family guest house, a barn, workshop, or a full-time residence, we want to provide practical information based on real experience.
If you dive into our blog area here on our website, you'll find articles about building in stages, designing for multi-generational living, making the most of rural properties, and planning for New England's changing seasons.
Of course, if you're building outside of the Northeast, we're still here to help. While we continue to ship our kits across the country, We always enjoy working with customers wherever their projects take them.
But we're also embracing what has always made Shelter-Kit unique.
We know New England.
We know the Northeast.
We know its climate, its character, and the people who choose to build here.
That knowledge comes from decades of conversations with homeowners, countless completed projects, and a genuine appreciation for the communities we live in and serve.
As we continue to grow our library of articles, customer stories, and building resources, we hope you'll find answers to your questions and inspiration for your own project.
Whether you're just beginning to dream or you're ready to break ground, we're excited to help you build something that will stand the test of time, just as Shelter-Kit has for more than half a century.
